Google Search Console AI search reporting falls short

Google Search Console does not give you a clear, separate view of how AI search is affecting your traffic or whether AI tools are mentioning your business. AI Overviews, AI Mode and the answers people get from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are shaping decisions before anyone clicks, and Google Search Console AI search reporting lumps most of that in with ordinary search or leaves it out entirely. If you rely on Console alone to judge your visibility, you are flying half blind. Below is what it misses, what that costs you, and how to track AI mentions another way.

What Google Search Console AI search reporting actually shows

Console is still a good tool. It tells you which queries you rank for, your clicks and impressions, your average position, and technical issues that stop pages being indexed. Use it. But when it comes to AI search, it goes quiet.

When your page appears inside an AI Overview at the top of Google, Console counts an impression, but it does not clearly label it as an AI Overview impression. You cannot easily split "shown in the AI answer" from "shown in the normal blue links". Clicks from AI features get folded into the wider numbers too.

And that is only Google. Console has nothing to say about ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot. If one of those tools recommends your business by name to someone ready to buy, Console will never tell you. There is no report for it. There is no line item.

Why the gaps matter for your business

Here is the shift. People used to search, scan a list of links, and click through to sites. Now a growing share get an answer straight away and act on it. If your business is named in that answer, you win the customer without a click. If a competitor is named instead, you lose them and never see it happen.

That breaks the old habit of judging your visibility by clicks and rankings. Your rankings could look fine while your click count quietly slides, because the answer is being handed over before anyone reaches your page. Console shows you the falling clicks. It does not tell you why.

The cost is real. You could be losing enquiries to a source you cannot see, blaming your website or your prices, and changing the wrong things. I have run businesses for 19 years, and the most expensive mistakes I have made all came from acting on an incomplete picture. Trusting one dashboard that was never built to answer the question is exactly that trap.

Stop trusting Console alone. Start tracking AI visibility.

You do not need a fancy setup. You need a habit and a couple of simple checks. Here is what actually works.

Ask the AI tools about yourself

Once a month, open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask the questions your customers would ask. "Best [your trade] in [your town]." "Who should I use for [your service] near me." Note whether you appear, how you are described, and who shows up instead. It is manual, it takes twenty minutes, and it tells you more than Console ever will.

Watch your referral traffic properly

In Google Analytics, keep an eye on referrals from domains like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. They are small numbers today for most businesses, but they are the early signal. Rising AI referrals mean the tools are sending people your way. Set aside ten minutes a month to check.

Give the AI tools something worth quoting

AI answers pull from clear, well-structured content that answers real questions directly. Thin pages and vague waffle get skipped. Pages that state facts plainly, answer common questions, and read like a straight reply get picked up. This is the same work that has always helped with search, done with a bit more care. Our SEO service and content service are built around making your pages the ones that get quoted, not ignored.

Keep your foundations solid

None of this works if your site is slow, messy or hard for a machine to read. Clean structure, fast loading and clear headings help both humans and AI. If your site is fighting you, a better-built website pays for itself here.

07 Heaven Marketing does this work for clients every week, and the businesses that treat AI search as another channel to measure, rather than a mystery to ignore, are the ones staying ahead.

"07 Heaven's SEO work brought a noticeable surge in organic traffic to our website and substantially improved our search rankings. They transformed our digital presence." Lloyd Seymour, Poppy Productions

The point is not to abandon Console. It is to stop asking it a question it cannot answer. Track your AI visibility on the side, act on what you see, and you will spot problems and opportunities months before your competitors do.

Common questions

Does Google Search Console show AI Overview traffic separately

No. Console counts impressions and clicks from AI Overviews inside its normal search reports without a clear, separate label. You cannot cleanly split AI Overview performance from standard results, which is why you need to watch your click trends and check the AI tools directly.

How do I know if ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions my business

Ask them. Type the questions your customers would ask and see if you appear and how you are described. Then check your referral traffic in Google Analytics for visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Do both monthly to build a picture over time.

Is SEO still worth it if AI is answering questions

Yes, more than ever. AI tools pull their answers from web pages, and clear, well-ranked, well-structured content is exactly what they favour. Good SEO now feeds both search rankings and AI answers, so the work does double duty.
