How to read Google AI search impressions in GSC

Google now counts the times your pages appear inside AI Overviews and AI Mode as part of your normal Search Console data, which means your google AI search impressions are already folded into the totals you see in the Performance report. The catch is that Google does not break them out with a simple tick box, so most owners have no idea how much of their visibility comes from AI answers versus the old blue links. This post shows you where to look, what the numbers actually tell you, and how to change your content so you get pulled into those AI results more often.

What Google actually counts

When someone searches and Google shows an AI Overview, any link inside that overview is treated as an impression for the page it points to. If the person clicks that link, it counts as a click. Same logic applies to AI Mode, the fuller conversational search experience Google has been rolling out.

So the important thing to understand first. These impressions are not sitting in a separate report waiting for you. They are already inside your normal Performance data, mixed in with everything else. Google has confirmed this in its own Search Console documentation.

That creates a quiet problem. Your impressions might be climbing while your clicks stay flat, because AI answers give people what they need without a click. If you do not know to look for that pattern, you will misread your own numbers.

The cost of reading it wrong

Get this wrong and you make bad calls with real money behind them. You see impressions up, clicks down, and you assume your content has gone stale or your rankings have slipped. So you rewrite pages that were doing fine, or worse, you cut spend on content that was quietly building your visibility.

The opposite mistake is just as costly. You ignore AI results entirely, keep writing the way you always have, and slowly stop appearing in the answers people actually read. Your competitors who structure their content for AI get quoted. You get skipped. And because it happens gradually inside a blended number, you never notice the leak until the enquiries dry up.

I have run businesses for 19 years, and the pattern is always the same. The metrics you do not understand are the ones that cost you the most, because you react to the wrong signal at the wrong time.

How to read your Google AI search impressions

Here is the honest state of play. Google does not yet give you a clean filter that says "show me only AI impressions". But you can still read the situation clearly with a bit of care.

  • Open the Performance report in Google Search Console and turn on both Total Impressions and Total Clicks at the top.
  • Watch the gap between them. If impressions rise while clicks stay flat or fall, that is often AI answers satisfying the query without sending a click. It is the clearest signal you will get right now.
  • Check average position against clicks. Strong positions with soft click-through often means your page is being cited or summarised rather than clicked.
  • Compare periods. Set the date range to compare the last three months with the previous three. Look for pages where the impression-to-click relationship has shifted, not just the raw totals.
  • Use the Pages tab to find which URLs carry that pattern. Those are your AI-visible pages, and they tell you what kind of content Google is choosing to pull from.

Read it this way and you stop panicking about a falling click-through rate that is actually a sign of growing AI visibility.

How to adjust your content so you show up in AI results

AI answers get built from content that is clear, direct and easy to lift. Here is what actually moves the needle.

  • Answer the question in the first line. Lead every page or section with a plain, complete answer before you add detail. AI models pull the sentence that stands on its own.
  • Write in real questions and answers. Match how people actually search. A clear question as a heading with a tight answer under it is easy for a model to quote.
  • Be specific and factual. Vague marketing waffle does not get cited. Concrete, useful statements do.
  • Structure for scanning. Short paragraphs, honest subheadings, sensible lists. If a human can scan it fast, a model can parse it fast.
  • Keep your pages fast and clean. Good technical SEO still matters, and slow, messy pages get overlooked. Solid hosting underpins all of it.

None of this is a trick. It is just good writing that respects the reader, which is what our content service is built around. Do it properly and you earn visibility in both the old links and the new answers.

That kind of result comes from getting the fundamentals right and then adapting to how search actually works now, not from chasing every new label Google adds.

Common questions

Where do I find AI search impressions in Search Console

They are inside the standard Performance report, blended into your Total Impressions and Total Clicks. Google does not give a separate AI-only filter yet, so you read them by watching the pattern between impressions and clicks rather than a dedicated tab.

Why are my impressions up but my clicks down

This is often a sign that Google is answering the query with an AI Overview using your content, so the searcher gets what they need without clicking through. It usually means your visibility is growing even if your click-through rate looks softer.

Can I stop my content appearing in Google AI results

You can influence it through robots settings and snippet controls, but for most small businesses appearing in AI results is a good thing. Being cited builds trust and awareness, and it still sends clicks when people want the full answer.
