How To Explain ‘Inbound Marketing’ To Non-Marketers This Christmas

The holidays usually contain conversations of ‘When will you be buying a house?’ ‘When will you be having children?’ ‘What do you actually do for a living?’ with the last being highly common for those working in the marketing industry. Although marketing is ALL around us, most do not actually know what it is and what it entails- time to impress your family!

What is marketing?

“The management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably.” A great description by CIM!

They added, “Every product we buy, every store we visit, every media message we receive and every choice we make in our consumer society has been shaped by the forces of marketing.”

Tesco carrier bag? Marketing.Christmas Coca-Cola Truck? Marketing.

Krispy Kreme’s Instagram page? Marketing.

Everything you can think of has some form of marketing involved within it.

Now you know what marketing is, what is inbound marketing?

“Inbound is a method of attracting, engaging, and delighting people to grow a business that provides value and builds trust.” Thank you, HubSpot for that accurate explanation.

Essentially, the focus is on being human and helpful rather than robotic and intrusive like previous traditional marketing methods.

The aim is to be conversational, allowing the customer to make the ‘decisions’. We put those dashes there as business’ would have guided and suggested the customer to make such decision through strategic methods aka, marketing.

The process is split into three stages: attract, engage, and delight.

Attract: Methods to entice users who are most likely to become a customer.
Engage: Conversations with potential customers so that long-term relationships are made.
Delight: Excellent customer service so that they share with their family and friends, allowing them to also become customers.

Your job? Allowing all of the above to happen! With the end result allowing a business to meet their goals. This could be increasing website visits, improving their email marketing or even having more sales- Inbound Marketing can achieve a range of objectives.
